Directory of College-Based GLBT Organizations

GLBT student organizations (i.e. unions or alliances) are student-based extracirricular groups composed of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning students and straight allies. The groups exist as a "safe space" for GLBT and queer-identified students. GLBT student organizations exist both at the university level, and less commonly at the high school level.

Government Resources
Database of Accredited Programs and Institutions

A searchable database of postsecondary institutions and programs accredited by accrediting agencies or state approval agencies recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. This database includes approximately 6,900 postsecondary educational institutions and programs.

FAFSA (Federal Student Aid)

Federal Student Aid, an office of the U.S. Department of Education, ensures that all eligible individuals can benefit from federally funded or federally guaranteed financial assistance for education beyond high school. They consistently champion the promise of post-secondary education to all Americans —and its value to our society.

State Education Agencies (State Department of Education)

Provides information, resources, and technical assistance on educational matters to the schools and the residents.

Public Edu Organizations
CampusPride.org

Campus Pride represents the only national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer college environment for LGBT students. The organization is a volunteer-driven network "for" and "by" student leaders. The primary objective of Campus Pride is to develop necessary resources, programs and services to support LGBT and ally students on college campuses across the United States.

The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS)

CLAGS was founded in 1991 as the first university-based research center in the United States dedicated to the study of historical, cultural, and political issues of vital concern to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and communities.

Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professional

Seeks climate improvement on college campuses; advocates for policy change, develos programs, and establishes LGBT Offices / Centers.

Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)

GLSEN strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation. They welcome as members any and all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or occupation, who share this philosophy.

GLBT Historical Society (GLBTHS)

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Historical Society (GLBTHS) collects, preserves, and interprets the history of GLBT people and the communities that support them. They sponsor exhibits and programs on an on-going basis.

GLBT History Month

October Is GLBT History Month. Modeled after Black and Women’s History Months, GLBT History Month highlights annually the achievements of 31 gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender Icons—one each day—with a free video, bio, bibliography, downloadable images and other resources.

Lambda 10 Project

The Lambda 10 Project is a National Clearinghouse for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Fraternity & Sorority Issues works to heighten the visibility of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members of the college fraternity by serving as a clearinghouse for educational resources and educational materials related to sexual orientation and gender identity/expression as it pertains to the fraternity/sorority experience.

Lesbian Archive & Information Centre

The Lesbian Archive and Information Centre (LAIC) was set up in London in 1984 and contains the UK’s largest and most significant collection of materials about lesbian lives, activism and achievements.

Lesbian Herstory Archives

The Lesbian Herstory Archives is home to the world's largest collection of materials by and about lesbians and their communities.

National Education Association

The NEA is America's oldest and largest organization committed to advancing the cause of public education. Founded in 1857 in Philadelphia and now headquartered in Washington, D.C., NEA proudly claims more than 2.5 million members who work at every level of education, from pre-school to university graduate programs.

National Queer Student Caucus (NQSC)

NQSC is an Affiliate of the United States Student Association which networks, organizes, and advocates for lesbian, gay, and bisexual students across the country.

ONE Institute International Gay & Lesbian Archives

The ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives houses the world's largest research library on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual,and Transgendered heritage and concerns.

Point Foundation

Point Foundation provides financial support, mentoring, leadership training and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.


Free Online College Courses
Carnegie Mellon University

CMU offers a number of free online courses and materials through a program called Open Learning Initiative. OLI courses are intended to allow anyone at an introductory college level to learn about a particular subject without formal instruction. Course options include such offerings as statistics, biology, chemistry, economics, French and physics.

Kutztown University of Pennsylvania

KU's Small Business Development Center offers the largest collection of free business courses available on the web. Course topics include accounting, finance, government, business law, marketing and sales. Comprehensive text, interactive case studies, slides, graphics and streaming audio help to demonstrate the concepts presented in each course.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

If you are looking for a wide range of free courses offered online, MIT is your best option. More than 1,800 free courses are offered through the school's OpenCourseWare project. Courses are in text, audio and video formats and translated into a number of different languages. Students all over the world use OpenCourseWare and 96 percent of visitors to this site say they would recommend it to someone else.

Open University

OU is the largest academic institution in the UK. The school's OpenLearn website gives everyone free access to both undergraduate and graduate-level course materials from The Open University. Courses cover a wide range of topics, such as the arts, history, business, education, IT and computing, mathematics and statistics, science, health and technology.

Stanford

This is one of the world's leading academic institutions, has joined forces with iTunes U in providing access to Stanford courses, lectures and interviews. These courses can be downloaded and played on iPods, PCs, and Macs and can also be burned to CDs.

Tufts University

Like MIT, Tufts has OpenCourseWare that is available free to everyone. Courses are sorted by school (i.e. School of Arts and Sciences, School of Medicine, etc.) and include assignments, lecture notes and other supplementary materials.

University of California, Berkeley

UCB is one of the best public universities in the nation, has been offering live and on-demand webcasts of certain courses since 2001. Hundreds of UC Berkeley courses, both current and archived, are now available as podcasts and webcasts. Courses cover a range of subjects, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer programming, engineering, psychology, legal studies and philosophy.

University of California, Irvine

UCI is one of the nation's top public universities, recently joined the OCW Consortium and began providing free university level courses online. Right now, there are only a handful of options to choose from, but this list is growing. Current courses cover topics like financial planning, human resources, capital markets and e-marketing. Course materials include syllabi, lecture notes, assignments and exams.

University of Southern Queensland

This Australian university provides free online access to a number of different courses through yet another OpenCourseWare initiative. Courses from each of the five faculties are available, covering a broad range of topics, including communication, science, career planning, technology, teaching and multimedia creation.

Utah State University

Study options at USU include everything from anthropology to physics and theatre arts. These comprehensive text-based courses can be downloaded as zip files or viewed directly on the site.
